LSU’s defense may lose some experience next season if the Tigers do, in fact, lose Maurice Hampton to another program.

A report from Matt Zenitz of AL.com said that Hampton has entered the transfer portal after the former 4-star recruit started 5 games for LSU as a sophomore last season. He started one game in 2019, and is a multi-sport athlete as he also is on the Tigers’ baseball team. He made 7 starts in the shortened baseball season in 2020.

On the football field in 2020, he appeared in 8 games, and made 27 tackles.

Hampton was ranked as a Top 100 prospect on 247Sports in the 2019 class, where he checked in as the No. 1 prospect in Tennessee and the No. 12 cornerback in the country. He was also listed as the nation’s 29th best baseball prospect going into the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, when he then turned down a reported $1.8 million signing bonus to attend LSU, Geaux247 reported. Because of his college commitment, Hampton wasn’t drafted until the 23rd round by the San Diego Padres.

His two-sport future will be one to watch as he’s already made history. He’s the first player in Tennessee history to earn Mr. Football and Mr. Baseball honors in the same season.
