Many don’t realize how important a specialist is until you don’t have one. LSU fans certainly don’t need to be reminded of the value a kicker has after seeing so many easy field goals and extra points missed last season.

In 2017, LSU missed an absurd 11 field goals and three extra points. While the Tigers are currently limited on scholarships, the program has reportedly added to the kicking competition without even having to use a precious scholarship.

Valdosta, Ga., prospect Tyson Shaw recently tweeted out that LSU has offered him a preferred walk-on spot for 2018. According to Dandy Don LSU Sports, Shaw has accepted that offer.

Shaw isn’t your typical specialist either, he’s was a multi-sport player in high school and comes with a five-star punter rating, as well as a four-star kicker rating according to noted specialist rating site Kohl’s Kicking. He also played extensively at linebacker for his high school football team.

Which role he fills at LSU is unknown at this time but considering the Tigers’ special teams issues from last season, the more competition the better down in Baton Rouge.
