The Florida Gators declared Oct. 15 “Tom Petty Day” in The Swamp, honoring the late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from Gainesville. Since Petty’s passing in 2017, Florida has played his hit song “I Won’t Back Down” during the break in between the third and fourth quarters.

For the Week 7 game, Florida had members of Petty’s family on hand, released limited edition merchandise and added the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ logo to the Gators’ uniform with a helmet sticker. The ESPN broadcast made sure everyone was aware. The day after LSU’s 45-35 win, the Tigers decided to rub it in, showing everyone that they knew the “Full Moon Fever” hit, too.

In a perfectly executed Twitter troll by LSU’s social media team, the Tigers’ shared a video of Brian Kelly specifically telling his players to know the words of the song and take the message to heart for the fourth quarter. The clip shows Kelly himself was singing along, along with some LSU highlights from the game. The accompanying tweet references the “stand my ground” line from the song’s lyrics.

LSU has now won 5 of the last 6 over Florida, including the “I Won’t Back Down” tribute debut game in 2017.
