With the fresh news that LSU WR Ja’Marr Chase has opted out of the 2020 season, speculation is running wild about which Tiger will wear No. 7 this season.

The well-known number at LSU signifies the top playmaker for the Tigers that season, on offense or defense. It has a storied and rich history of all-time players wearing it over the years. Chase is arguably the best receiver in the country, so his absence will be felt across the LSU roster.

Grant Delpit wore it last season, and that followed D.J. Chark, Leonard Fournette, Tyrann Mathieu and Patrick Peterson, who started the tradition of outstanding players wearing No. 7 for the Tigers.

But Derek Stingley, Jr. was immediately thought of to replace Chase as the No. 7 jersey holder this season. Not so fast, according to a tweet from here where he had a lock on No. 24.

Recent seasons have seen mixed results from the players wearing No. 7. Delpit had a solid season last year, but also dealt with injuries.

Peterson, who wore the number from 2008-10, was chosen as the winner of the Bednarik Award for the best defensive player in the country and the Thorpe Award for the best defensive back in the country.

Mathieu wore the number in 2010 and 2011, and won the Bednarik Award and finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting as a sophomore. But Mathieu’s LSU career ended prematurely when he was dismissed from the team during preseason camp in 2012 after he failed multiple drug tests.
