Matt House is pleased with what he’s seen this spring from Harold Perkins, the star linebacker at LSU, and the defensive coordinator shared what’s improved already for Perkins.

“He’s got a better understanding of our process and how we prepare,” House said. “His habits have been much more consistent. He loves football and is very coachable.”

Perkins had 7.5 sacks last season, but House said Perkins is working to be more than just a pass rusher.

“We know Harold has elite ability, but he came here to learn linebacker,” House said. “He is still playing outside some, but he is here to be a complete linebacker.”

House coached in the SEC at Kentucky from 2016-18 before he left for the Kansas City Chiefs. Since his return, House said the SEC is still a line of scrimmage league.

In other news, House commented on other defenders:

Sage Ryan at starting nickel this spring has shown improvement: “Still a lot of room for growth,” House said, “but he’s been more consistent.”

On the defensive line being thin, House said LSU knows what Mekhi Wingo is, and what Maason Smith can be: “It’s an opportunity to see other guys and their growth. I feel like we’re in a good spot there. … I am pleased with Jacobian’s growth, Saivion’s growth. You still have Mekhi and Maason. There’s a lot of depth there. We expect to be really good there.”

On Omar Speights at linebacker, House said, “I love Omar’s approach. He does a great job and setting the tone at the position.”
