NFL Draft prospects will be busy training between now and April’s draft in Las Vegas. While game tape and Pro Days will be evaluated by teams, the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis figures to be the biggest audition for most prospects. On his ESPN podcast with Todd McShay, draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. recently explained why Grant Delpit has a big opportunity at the Combine.

“The ankle injury, that’s something you have to factor in,” Kiper said. “He was hurt. The missed tackles were something people are going to knock him down for. What’s going to help him … he’s going to be fast. He’s going to be in that 4.5, maybe 4.46 to 4.50 range. They’ll have a pro day so we’ll see if he does anything at the Combine. If he doesn’t, the pro day. I do think he’ll gain momentum once he works out. Coming off the ankle, it only takes one team.

“I think 17 may be the high point. Dallas is that spot. He could drop a little later. Some people think he’s more of a second-round pick based on the way he played this year. But I think the ankle, you have to factor that in. It’s going to be interesting. The Combine or pro day, when he runs, we’ll have an idea that Delpit will be one of those guys with the arrow pointing up a little bit.”

Delpit’s production dropped was down in 2019 after a monster 2018 season, but the junior won this year’s Thorpe Award for the nation’s top defensive back.

The Combine begins Thursday, Feb. 27 and runs through Sunday, March 1.
