Paul Skenes became a superstar in 2023 for his pitching, but he’d like to both pitch and hit as a professional baseball player.

Fresh off helping LSU win the College World Series, Skenes joined Michael Kay and Alex Rodriguez on the “KayRod Cast” of the Sunday Night Baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets.

Skenes began his career at Air Force. He was a catcher and a pitcher. At the plate, Skenes was quite the slugger for Air Force. He had a batting average of .367 in 99 games, recording 125 hits, including 24 home runs and 31 doubles with 81 RBIs.

Sunday, Skenes was asked about potentially being a 2-way player a la Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani. Skenes would love to pick up the bat in his pro career.

“Absolutely,” Skenes told the KayRod Cast. “Obviously, I didn’t hit this past year, but I’ve hit. I was actually a primary hitter coming into college and then I just started pitching my senior year of high school and it kind of blossomed into what it is now. But I’m 6-foot-7 and I’ve caught my whole life. I don’t know how that totally works. But yeah, I’ve hit my whole life and obviously started pitching the last few years. I’ve done both for the past few years and want to continue to do both as long as I can.”

MLB Pipeline recently projected the Washington Nationals to take Skenes at No. 2 overall in the upcoming MLB Draft. Wherever Skenes lands, the club is sure to be asked about letting the star pitcher takes some swings at the plate.
