LSU baseball has a pair of elite prospects who are expected to be picked early in this month’s MLB Draft.

Dylan Crews and Paul Skenes are both candidates to go No. 1 overall and could hear their named called back-to-back atop the draft.

Earlier this week, MLB Pipeline released their updated mock for the 2023 MLB Draft. According to MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis, Crews is still projected to be the No. 1 overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Crews is widely-regarded as the top prospect in this year’s class, but he could slip past the No. 1 pick due to signing bonus concerns. Here’s an excerpt of analysis from Callis:

There are rumors that Crews wants $10 million, which would be doable because the No. 1 choice comes with an assigned value of $9,721,000 and the Pirates have the largest bonus pool at $16,185,700. If the Nationals have their hearts set on Skenes at No. 2, the only other club that might meet that price would be the Tigers at No. 3. If Pittsburgh wants Crews, it seems impossible that he could turn down any offer that starts with a 9, which would shatter the all-time bonus record of $8,416,300 set by Spencer Torkelson and the Tigers in 2020.

Callis is also projecting Skenes to be picked No. 2 overall by the Washington Nationals. Unless Skenes goes No. 1 overall, the Nationals are considered a “lock” to pick Skenes with the 2nd pick, per Callis.

The 2023 MLB Draft will begin on Saturday, July 9.
