It was smooth sailing for LSU on Saturday night.

The Tigers started the 2017 season with a dominating performance over BYU in New Orleans, winning 27-0.

Most of LSU’s highlights were of Derrius Guice, the outstanding Tiger running back. The pride of Louisiana football had a monster day on the ground, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Quarterback Danny Etling was better than efficient, throwing only three incompletions under first-year offensive coordinator Matt Canada. BYU had a tougher time.

Tanner Mangum had a miserable day trying to attack the Tiger defense, only completing 50 percent of his passes for slightly over 100 yards and one interception. It wasn’t just Magnum who struggled mightily. The whole BYU offense couldn’t get any sustainable drives going against Dave Aranda’s stingy defense.

The Cougars faltered all night long in third down situations and on the ground. They finished with only 6 first downs and -5 rushing yards on the evening. The Tigers assembled 479 total yards compared to BYU’s 97.

The Cougar defense didn’t fare much better. BYU safety Micah Hannemann was flagged during the game for a targeting penalty when he hit Derrius Guice, ending his participation early.

LSU’s D.J. Chark looked like a viable receiving threat, catching four passes for 77 yards, including a long of 52. The senior could have a huge impact on the LSU passing game moving forward.

The Tigers take on Chattanooga next week in Baton Rouge Saturday night at 7:30 ET on the SEC Network.
