A day after Ed Orgeron announced Justin Thomas has left the team, the former LSU defensive end has reportedly taken the first step to finding a new team.

According to Brody Miller of The Athletic, Thomas has now entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. While technically a player is not bound to leave by entering his name into the transfer portal, with Orgeron saying Thomas has left the team, a return to the Tigers looks highly unlikely. LSU’s official website has already Thomas from the team’s 2020 roster.

Thomas was a class of 2017 signee out of Spanish Fort High School in Alabama. Former Tigers assistants Dameyune Craig and Dave Arranda led LSU’s recruitment of Thomas. Craig is now on Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M staff and Aranda is the head coach at Baylor. Current Tennessee head coach Jeremy Pruitt recruited Thomas while on Nick Saban’s Alabama staff. As a 3-star prospect, Thomas also had offers from Arkansas, South Carolina and UT.

Thomas played in 9 games over the last two seasons. In 2019, he appeared in 5 games last season with 8 tackles, including a sack and 2 tackles for a loss. In 2018, Thomas played in 4 games, recording 4 tackles and a half-sack for a 4-yard loss. He was expected to be in the mix for a backup spot in 2020.
