The Tigers were already nearly a four-touchdown favorite to open the season at home against Georgia Southern (the line is currently at LSU +26.5) and now the outcome of that game looks all the more certain as the Eagles have suspended two key players heading into fall camp.

Georgia Southern will likely be without starting quarterback Shai Werts and starting defensive end Anquan Griffin when the Eagles open the season in Death Valley as GSU head coach Chad Lunsford recently announced both players have been suspended indefinitely.

“In keeping with our student-athlete Code of Conduct, Georgia Southern University suspended quarterback Shai Werts and defensive Anquan Griffin, from all football-related operations and after we received information that the two were recently arrested in separate incidents this week,” Lunsford announced.

If you were unaware, Georgia Southern runs a triple-option offense. Now without the centerpiece of the team’s offense, GSU looks far less intimating.

Last fall during his sophomore season, Werts threw for 987 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 908 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns for Georgia Southern. Based upon the charges levied against him, it’s hard to imagine he returns in time for the opener against LSU.

“Shai was arrested Wednesday in South Carolina during a traffic stop. It is our understanding he was charged with speed and misdemeanor possession of cocaine after some residue was discovered on the hood of the car,” Lunsford added. “Quan was arrested yesterday in Baker County, Florida. It is our understanding he was charged in conjunction with a domestic dispute. The suspensions are in place to protect Shai, Quan and the university.”
