Mario Cristobal is making a staff change. On Tuesday, Cristobal announced the firing of Hurricane defensive coordinator Lance Guidry.
“I want to first thank Coach Guidry for his contributions to the University of Miami,” Cristobal said in a statement, per Adam Lichtenstein of the Sun Sentinel.
“In a continuous effort to always improve all aspects of our program, I have decided to make a change on defense. We will move forward and make decisions that provide our players, staff and program the best opportunity to win and develop at the highest level.”
Guidry 2-year tenure in Coral Gables ends days after UM’s loss in the Pop-Tarts Bowl to Iowa State. The Hurricanes had a 10-win season, but frequently had to win high-scoring games. After a 10-1 start, Miami lost its last 2 games to Syracuse and ISU by scores of 42-38 and 42-41.
In ACC play, Miami ranked 13 out of 17 in scoring defense, allowing 30.8 points per game. The number was 42 points per game in 2 games against opponents ranked in the AP Top 25.
Guidry, 53, has coached for 3 decades. Before Miami, he was defensive coordinator at Marshall for 2021 and ’22. He succeeded Kevin Steele as Miami’s defensive coordinator. Steele was UM’s DC for 2022 before taking the same position at Alabama on Nick Saban’s staff in 2023.
