Hal Mumme and Mike Leach were the architects of the Air Raid offense, helping change the game of football in the process.

Leach and Mumme used a lot of systems and schematics from BYU’s LaVell Edwards, who coached successful quarterbacks such as Ty Detmer, Steve Young and Jim McMahon to success in the college and pro game.

The spread offense has become how college football is played in the modern NFL and college ranks, and a piece of it can be traced back to Leach and Mumme refining Edwards’ philosophies into the Air Raid at Iowa Wesleyan in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in the late 1980s.

Leach sadly passed away Monday night as a result of complications from a heart condition. Mumme remembered the life of Leach on SEC Network Tuesday afternoon.

See part of his segment below.

Mumme went on to coach at a myriad of places after his days at Iowa Wesleyan and Valdosta State and Kentucky with Leach as OC.

May Mike Leach rest in peace.
