With Joe Moorhead taking over in Starkville and as we inch closer to his first season as Hail State head coach, we’ll soon finally get to see what his offense looks like with Mississippi State’s personnel.

While that will remain a mystery for another few days, we at least know who will be behind the controls of the offense when the team takes the field on Sept. 1 for the opener against Stephen F. Austin. During his latest media availability, Moorhead revealed that he will be calling the plays this season for Mississippi State.

However, calling the offense isn’t simply a one-man job on Moorhead’s staff, he’ll look for help between each series from his staff on what they are seeing. Here’s how Moorhead broke it down recently when asked about gameday play calling.

“I call the plays. I will get suggestions from those guys. In between series is when most of those suggestions will occur,” Moorhead said. “Luke (Getsy) will have an overall grasp of the pass and run game, but his expertise lies in the pass game with coach (Andrew) Breiner. Charles (Huff), Marcus (Johnson) and (Mark) Hudspeth will work on protections, run game and things like that.

“There is a system for when the series ends, we get on the horn and talk about what we saw on the previous series and make our corrections and suggestions for the next series. What I don’t like is a bunch of noise when I’m trying to call plays. It is almost impossible, so there is not going to be a bunch of people talking while we’re trying to get the play called. They will have a significant amount of input.”

So there you have it, Moorhead will be calling the plays, as he’s done for years and he’ll lean on his offensive staff to provide him with insight on what they are seeing from each of their strengths when it comes to identifying and coaching in realtime when the action is happening and subtleties need to be recognized immediately.
