If it’s up to Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead, then Nick Fitzgerald is going to have to make room for some new hardware after the upcoming season.

After Moorhead was hired by the Bulldogs, he soon texted the senior quarterback with an optimistic message.

“He said, ‘I want you to clear off a spot on your mantle for the Heisman Trophy and I want you to know what your ring size is. You’re going to need it,'” Fitzgerald said while meeting with reporters at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Wednesday.

It’s certainly not an unreasonable prediction that Fitzgerald could win the Heisman this season.

Last year, Fitzgerald passed for 1,782 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 984 yards and 14 touchdowns while leading Mississippi State to a 9-4 season.

Add another year of experience for Fitzgerald, and he may not just be one of the top players in the SEC, but perhaps the entire country.

Moorhead’s coaching career with the Bulldogs — and Fitzgerald’s bid for a potential Heisman Trophy — begin Sept. 1, when they host Stephen F. Austin to open the 2018 season.
