Eli Drinkwitz said the conversation about Cody Schrader needs to move beyond just a feel-good story.

After a 48-14 win over Arkansas to close out the season, Drinkwitz said the Tigers’ star tailback belongs in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy.

“Let’s start talking about putting him up for the Heisman for the best player in the country,” Drinkwitz said on the CBS broadcast immediately after the game. “He just rushed for 200 yards tonight. He’s been doing it consistently in the SEC. We’re a top-10 team. He’s the best back in the country. Let’s quit making it about being a feel-good story, he’s a hell of a player. That’s what it’s about. He’s a hell of a player. He deserves to be talked about for the Heisman Trophy.”

Schrader finished with a Missouri career-high 217 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. It marked the tailback’s fifth consecutive 100-yard game and his eighth on the season. It was also his second 200-yard outing in the last three weeks.

Schrader had just four carries stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage all day. Schrader hit for runs of 12, 14, 16, 36, 43, and 49 yards.

On the season, Schrader is up to 1,489 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. He entered Friday’s contest leading the SEC in total rushing yardage. And after the latest Mizzou win, he’s averaging 6.0 yards per carry on the year.

Current betting odds for the Heisman have Schrader on the outside looking in. We’ll see if Drinkwitz’s stump speech can move the needle any.
