The Mayor’s Cup is at stake this week between South Carolina and Missouri as the Columbia schools meet for the 10th time with the Gamecocks holding a three-game winning streak.

Each team lost their season opener, and South Carolina fell to 1-2 last week following the Alabama loss, while Missouri is up to 2-1 following wins over West Virginia and Southeast Missouri State. While the schools may have other rivals, there is some spice to this one, especially in the SEC East standings.

“It’s a huge rivalry, back to when Jadeveon Clowney, (Marcus Murphy) and all those guys played,” said Richaud Floyd in a video shared by Andrew Kauffman of ABC-17. “This game is always fun because you know they’re going to come out and talk some trash, and it’s going to be a hard-fought game and very physical game. You just know when we play them, you better have your chin strap buckled, it’s going to be a grown man game.”

Added Johnathan Johnson, “We’ve been talking about it every year, of course we want to win the trophy. We got to bring the trophy back to Columbia. This Columbia, Missouri.”

Barry Odom hasn’t beaten South Carolina as Missouri’s head coach and he remembers last year’s rain-soaked game at Williams-Brice Stadium where the Gamecocks had a late comeback to secure the win. He said at his press conference on Tuesday that he would bring an umbrella next time and not trust trust the weather forecast.
