Mizzou annihilates Mississippi State for largest ranked road win in school history
Mizzou shot 55% from the field and just buried No. 14 Mississippi State in its own building on Saturday.
The Tigers (17-4, 6-2 SEC) got 20 points from Caleb Grill and 14 points from Tamar Bates to lead the way in an 88-61 victory over the Bulldogs (16-6, 4-5). The win was Mizzou’s fourth over an AP-ranked opponent this season and the second over a ranked opponent away from home in conference play.
Since an 84-68 loss to Auburn on Jan. 4, Mizzou has now won 6 of its last 7.
And the latest was one of the best ever — the largest road victory over a ranked opponent in program history.
Mizzou opened on a 10-2 run. Guard Tony Perkins and forward Mark Mitchell hit triples 75 seconds into the game as the Tigers surged out of the gates. They hit 4 of their first 5 shots before missing 6 straight.
Mississippi State used that lull to go on an 11-2 run of its own to briefly take the lead. Josh Hubbard, fresh off a 38-point showing against Alabama, knocked down his first 2 triples of the game to help push the Bulldogs out to a 13-12 lead.
Fifty-nine seconds after MSU nudged out ahead, Mizzou guard Jacob Crews splashed a 3 to put the visitors back on top.
Mississippi State trailed the rest of the way. Grill drilled 4 triples in the first half as Mizzou closed on a 10-0 run to take a 45-31 lead into the break. Grill hit 2 more triples early in the second half to help fuel a 15-0 run. He was spraying them from everywhere, even the mid-court logo.
Mizzou led by as many as 29 points in a game that was awfully streaky. Mississippi State missed its final 5 shots from the field to end the first half. It missed 6 straight shots early in the second half. Mizzou missed its first 2 takes after the break before knocking down 10 of its next 14.
The Tigers ended the game shooting 55% from the field. They made 15 of their 32 triples (47%) and got 46 points from the bench. Grill made 6 of his 11 triples to get his 20 points. Bates shot 5-for-7. But more than just the 2 stars, it was a collective effort from Mizzou on the road. Seven different Tigers finished with a make from deep in the game.
Hubbard scored 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting to lead Mississippi State. He went 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and 4-for-4 from the foul line. KeShawn Murphy added 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The rest of the team shot 7-for-34 (20.6%) from the floor.
The Tigers head back out on the road next Wednesday to face No. 8 Tennessee. Mississippi State, which has now lost 5 of its last 7, will look to get back on track when it hosts Georgia next Saturday.
