A former SEC defender was destined to go at No. 16 in last month’s NFL Draft, but it wasn’t always clear which player would be going.

The pick belonged to Baltimore, but with former Missouri DE Charles Harris on the board, the Dallas Cowboys were reportedly interested, according to Charean Williams of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The talks did not very far, however, and the Ravens ended up selecting former Alabama CB Marlon Humphrey, the first Crimson Tide player off the board.

Harris wound up at No. 22 overall, going to the Miami Dolphins. The Cowboys were serious about their interest in a pass-rusher, grabbing former Michigan DE Taco Charlton at No. 28. The two had very similar stats in 2016, with Harris posting 12 tackles for loss and nine sacks, while Charlton had 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.

Unfortunately for Harris, the contract for No. 16 ($11,860,820 value, $6,756,751 signing bonus) would have been worth a bit more than what he’ll be getting at No. 22 ($10,875,220 value, $$6,026,859 bonus), per Forbes.
