College baseball season is off and running with the calendar turning to March, and that means some wild results are bound to be in store. That was the case on Tuesday night when George Mason hosted Holy Cross.
That game featured the Patriots run-ruling Holy Cross with a 26-6 score in 7 innings. However, that final score is just the tip of the iceberg.
George Mason’s big push came in the 2nd inning when the Patriots scored a DI college baseball record with 23 runs. That broke the previous record of 21 runs scored in an inning by Penn State (1983) and Wichita State (1984).

Beyond the total runs scored, the way the Patriots accomplished the output is remarkable in itself. George Mason did not have a home run in the inning and had just 5 extra-base hits (all doubles).
At one point, 19 straight Patriots reached base. The frame included an astounding 8 walks and 5 hit-by-pitches from the Holy Cross pitching staff. Freshman catcher Andrew Raymond scored 3 runs in the inning and drove in 3 innings. A total of 4 George Mason players each scored 3 runs apiece in the historic frame.
Remarkably, the 26 total runs in the game is not a single-game record for the Patriots. They previously scored 36, also against Holy Cross, in 1996.
