Dylan Volantis got out of jam after jam on Saturday. It wasn’t necessarily a dominant day for the star pitcher, but he left Game 1 with Texas leading 7-0 after throwing 10 strikeouts, allowing 8 hits and 2 earned runs.
And that was enough. Texas baseball is now 1 win away from another trip to Omaha after downing No. 11 Oregon in Game 1, 11-3.
Volantis was so important to this win because, if you judged the game by hits alone, the score of this one would flat-out shock you. The Ducks finished with 9 hits on the afternoon (more than Texas’ 8) but just couldn’t get anything going with runners in position. Volantis was absolutely fantastic when it mattered.
Two of Oregon’s 3 runs on the afternoon came after the Longhorns walked a pair of batters with bases loaded.
It helps that Texas’ offense came to play, too — especially Adrian Rodriguez. The Longhorns shortstop totaled 2 hits and 5 RBIs, including a pair of sacrifice flys.
Texas also hit 2 home runs on the day off the bats of Ethan Mendoza and Casey Borba.
The Longhorns will play for a shot at Omaha tomorrow night at 9 p.m. ET.
