Wes Johnson is set to make $300,000 more in his new deal as the Georgia baseball head coach.
UGA announced an extension with increased compensation for Johnson last week. On Tuesday, Anthony Dasher of Rivals shared that a records request revealed Johnson’s salary is being bumped to $1.3 million annually. Johnson’s new deal runs through 2031.
Johnson received a new deal before completing his second season as the Georgia skipper. His extension and raise came to be after the rumor mill linked Johnson to the opening at Mississippi State.
It’s no surprise that UGA wanted to lock down Johnson. Inheriting a program that had been up and down in recent years, Johnson has established Georgia as a contender in the ultracompetitive SEC.
The Bulldogs are 42-15 entering the NCAA Tournament, giving Johnson an 85-32 record (.726 winning percentage) in his tenure as head coach. UGA is hosting an NCAA Regional for the 8th time in school history, with 2 coming in Johnson’s first 2 seasons. Georgia is a top-8 national seed (No. 7) for the second consecutive season, the 7th time in program history.
Johnson, 53, arrived in Athens ahead of the 2024 season after serving on the staff of 2023 College World Series champion LSU. He also has experience as a college pitching coach at Mississippi State (2016) and Arkansas (2017-18), before joining the MLB’s Minnesota Twins for 4 seasons (2019-22).
The Athens Regional includes No. 7 seed Georgia, Duke (Regional 2-seed), Oklahoma State (3-seed) and Binghamton (4-seed). UGA faces Binghamton on Friday at noon ET.
