Kentucky baseball is 9-2 on the season following a series sweep of St. John’s this weekend. The Wildcats leaned on impressive pitching in games 1, 2 and 3 to earn 3-1, 3-0 and 3-1 wins over the Red Storm, respectively.
Better yet, the Wildcats did not trail for even one second of this weekend’s series. St. John’s isn’t a particularly great team, but it’s hard to feel bad about Nick Mangione’s pitching staff as the season continues onward.
Jaxon Jelkin gave an early snapshot of the weekend with a great performance on the mound Friday. Jelkin threw 94 pitches across 7 1/3rd innings, striking out 8 batters with just 2 allowed hits.
Game 2 saw a balanced pitching effort end in similar fashion. Hudson Brown and Caeden Cloud each brought home a run, the latter of which was Cloud’s first career hit.
Like in Games 1 and 2, Kentucky controlled Game 3 from the start. Cloud knocked home another run in the first inning, giving the Cats an early 2-0 lead – which might as well have been 30 the way the Wildcats were pitching. All in all, the Wildcats pitching staff allowed just 2 earned runs across 36 innings of baseball this past week, including Kentucky’s 4-0 win over Western Kentucky on Wednesday.
Kentucky has a 1% chance to win the national title this season, according to Kalshi. Here’s an early look at the top contenders.
