Midweek college baseball games are always a potluck for even the best of teams, something the No. 2 LSU Tigers learned the hard way Wednesday night – falling to the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns 7-2 at Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette.
The loss was LSU’s second straight setback and dropped the Tigers to 11-3. Louisiana improved to 10-3 with the victory.
“It’s tough to have lessons in losses, but sometimes it grabs the team’s attention,” said LSU coach Jay Johnson. “We’re ready to get into more of a normal routine now, and I do think we will gain value from tonight’s game.
“I’m glad we’re learning some things that we need and will do better. We’ve had a little bit of speed bump, and I’ll use that to make this team better.”
The Ragin Cajuns jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead, only to see that margin clipped to 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Trent Caraway belted a two-run homer to left field.
But Louisiana immediately responded, scoring three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and then adding an insurance run in the seventh for the final tally.
Cody Brasch earned the victory for Louisiana, striking out five Tigers over three innings of work. Sawyer Pruitt threw four shutout innings and struck out four to earn the save. LSU’s Gavin Guidry earned the loss. LSU also committed three errors in the game.
