Ole Miss’s comeback bid proves too little, too late as Rebels fall to Murray State

Ole Miss baseball’s comeback attempt came up just short. The Rebels’ season has come to an end at the hands of Murray State, 12-11.
At first, it seemed like this one was going to be the inverse of Sunday night’s 19-8 win by Ole Miss. The Racers jumped to a massive lead with relative ease – it seemed like their bats were never going to cool off. For most of the game, Murray State led by 5 or more runs. At one point, the Racers led 12-3 with the Rebels looking completely lost on both sides of the field.
However, Ole Miss found new life in the bottom of the 7th. That’s thanks in part to the bats of Luke Hill and Will Furniss, but also thanks to some truly disastrous miscues on the mound by Murray State. The Racers walked in not one, but 2 runs before Hill and Furniss drove in 3 runs of their own to cut into the Racers lead. At this point, Murray State’s 12-3 lead had been whittled to 12-8.
The Murray State miscues didn’t end in the 7th. Ole Miss followed their impressive inning with 3 more runs in the 8th, thanks to this massive swing from Brayden Randle:
It’s hard to express just how loud it got in Oxford following this home run by Randle, but Murray State dug in and responded very well. Pitcher Graham Kelham got out of the inning with a pair of outs, then buried the Rebels 1-2-3 in the 9th inning. “Impressive” doesn’t do it justice given the circumstances.
The Racers will face off against Duke next weekend in the Super Regional round.
