South Carolina baseball has found its next head coach.
According to a report from Pete Nakos and JC Shurburtt on Tuesday, the Gamecocks have hired former Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall to come lead the team in Columbia. Schnall served as Coastal’s coach in 2025 and 2026 after working as associate head coach for the Chanticleers from 2016-2024.
That gig was actually Schnall’s second stint with Coastal Carolina. He previously served as an assistant for CC from 2001-2012 before leaving for an assistant role at UCF.
Schnall saw immediate success with Coastal Carolina in 2025, leading the Chanticleers to the national championship game where they fell to LSU. Coastal made it back to the NCAA Tournament this season despite dealing with injury issues, but fell in the Tallahassee regional to Northern Illinois and Florida State.
According to a report from TheBigSpurโs Jamie Bradford, Coastal Carolina pitching coach Matt Williams will follow Schnall to Columbia.
Schnall replaces Paul Mainieri, who was let go after a disappointing start to his second season with the Gamecocks. South Carolina is desperate to get back to the program’s winning ways after missing the postseason for the 3rd time across the past 5 seasons in 2026, and the hiring of Schnall shows the program is serious about doing just that.
