Troy’s Cinderella run in the NCAA Tournament has come to an end. In a Tuesday elimination game, No. 16 overall seed West Virginia walloped the Trojans 12-0. WVU moves on to face North Carolina for a spot in the College World Series Finals.
West Virginia broke the scoring ice with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning. It remained a 2-0 game until the 6th, when the Mountaineers broke it open with 4 more runs to go up 6-0.
WVU added 1 in the 7th and then poured it on with 5 more in the 9th, putting it well out of reach for a Troy team that struggled all day at the plate.

It was “one of those days” for Troy batters. Unfortunately for the Trojans, the season was on the line.
As suggested by being out-hit 14-4, Troy had a particularly rough 9 innings at the plate. The Trojans went 0-for-9 with 2 outs, 1-for-18 with runners on and 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
On the mound, Dawson Montesa set the tone for West Virginia. The WVU went 5.1 innings, allowing 2 hits while walking 4 and striking out 6 over 112 pitches (64 strikes). The Mountaineers used 3 relievers to finish off the 12-0 victory.
Gavin Kelly led West Virginia’s offensive attack with a 4-RBI day. He hit a 3-run home run in the top of the 6th inning to give the Mountaineers some breathing room.

West Virginia will play again on Wednesday. It’s a do-or-die situation for the Mountaineers. A WVU win over North Carolina would force a winner-take-all game on Thursday. UNC advances to the CWS championship series with a win on Wednesday or Thursday. West Virginia needs to beat the Tar Heels twice to advance.
