After some disappointing postseason results for the conference, the ACC is reportedly passing its resolution to reduce the number of games on the conference schedule moving forward.

Matt Norlander with CBS Sports reported on Wednesday that the ACC athletic directors have agreed to the resolution to drop the conference schedule from 20 games to 18 games. The resolution was reported on earlier in April and comes about after some lackluster March Madness numbers for the league.

This past season, the ACC sent just 4 of its teams to the NCAA Tournament, despite the fact that Duke advanced all the way to the Final Four. It was the 4th straight season that the ACC sent 5 or fewer teams to the Big Dance after producing at least 6+ bids in every NCAA Tournament from 2014-21.

The ACC has still produced deep runs throughout the postseason, including at least one Final Four team for 3 straight seasons (Miami in 2023, NC State in 2024 and Duke this season). However, it has become increasingly undesirable for the best teams in the league to play 20 games in the ACC when a couple of those games could be redistributed against marquee nonconference opponents.
