College basketball season is right around the corner. The sport of focus in Tuscaloosa, for now, is still football. But Nate Oats never stops grinding away in a quest to keep basketball at the forefront of Alabama fans’ minds.
On Saturday, the Crimson Tide basketball program landed a commitment from 2027 5-star prospect Zion Green. The Chandler, AZ native is the No. 24 prospect in 247Sports Composite rankings.

Green, a 6-foot-9 power forward, is the No. 3 player at his position and No. 5 player from Arizona in the 2027 class. He joins combo guard Chase Lumpkin, out of Powder Springs, GA, as Alabama’s second commit of the 2027 class.
Lumpkin slots one spot ahead of Green in 247Sports Composite rankings. Both players, though, are two of the 10 highest-rated prospects the Crimson Tide has ever snagged in basketball. They rank seventh and eighth, respectively, behind Aiden Sherell — who transferred to Indiana during the offseason — and 2026 freshman Jaxon Richardson.
Alabama reached the Sweet Sixteen for the fourth consecutive year in 2025-26. The Crimson Tide fell to eventual national champion Michigan 90-77 to end their campaign. Nate Oats’ team begins its 2026-27 season against Sam Houston State on Tuesday, Nov. 3 (7:30 p.m. ET).
