Amari Allen, Kevin Overton have heated postgame exchange after Alabama beats Auburn

There was a lot on the line when Auburn and Alabama rounded out their regular seasons against one another in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night. Nate Oats and the Crimson Tide needed a win to lock up the No. 2 seed in the SEC Tournament. Meanwhile, Steven Pearl’s Tigers were searching for their first victory of substance in over a month to improve their NCAA Tournament resume.

The two teams entered action heading in polar opposite directions (Alabama was 8-1 in its last 9 games; Auburn was 2-7). Their respective trends continued, thanks to the Crimson Tide trouncing the Tigers 96-84 in a game that wasn’t as close as that score indicated. Afterward, some emotion boiled over as Amari Allen and Kevin Overton traded words in the postgame handshake line.

It’s clear that something Allen said struck a chord with Overton, whose visceral response is indicative of how people across the college basketball landscape feel about Auburn still being on the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 16-15 record.

Regardless, Auburn cannot afford to be one-and-done at the SEC Tournament. A loss to Mississippi State (3:00 p.m. E.T., SEC Network) on Wednesday would knock them out of tournament contention.
