Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is taking a leave of absence from the Red Raiders football program and will be checking into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sorsby is under NCAA investigation after it was discovered that Sorsby made “thousands” of bets via multiple gambling apps, often small wagers that included bets made on Indiana football while he was a member of the team in 2022. These bets were not made on games he appeared in, per Thamel’s report.

Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire released the following statement concerning the news:
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” McGuire said, via ESPN. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
Sorsby is considered by many to be one of the top returners in college football this upcoming season. He totaled 27 touchdown passes and 9 rushing touchdowns while throwing for 2,800 yards and rushing for 580.
The former Cincinnati quarterback transferred to Texas Tech looking to lead the Red Raiders back to the playoffs. Obviously, his future with Texas Tech is now at risk, as is a permanent loss of college eligibility according to NCAA guidelines.
