College basketball isn’t set to tip off for a few more weeks, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t headlines being made as teams across the country are preparing for the start of their respective seasons.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Tarleton State head coach Billy Gillispie has reportedly been placed on temporary administrative leave pending an investigation by the school.
Thamel’s report didn’t specify what exactly Gillispie is being investigated for, only that it involved a “complaint” made to the university.
Gillispie is entering his sixth season as the head coach of the Tarleton State Texans, but made his name in the mid-to-late 2000s as the top man for Texas A&M and Kentucky.
He helped revive the Aggies’ long-dormant program and was chosen by the Wildcats to replace Tubby Smith ahead of the 2007 campaign.
There were high hopes for Gillispie when he took the job at Kentucky, but it ultimately wasn’t meant to be, as he was fired after just 2 seasons at the helm, paving the way for the John Calipari era to begin in Lexington.
Gillispie has been Tarleton State’s head coach since 2020. The Texans have had one winning season under his leadership. They went 25-10 in 2023-24 but missed the NCAA Tournament after losing in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament.
