College basketball game delayed by lengthy fan brawl in stands

College basketball season is heating up as teams prepare for February and a push to try and get into the NCAA Tournament in March. On Tuesday night, it was Atlantic-10 foes Saint Louis and VCU facing off in a heated affair, but it wasn’t just the action on the court that was spicy.
Late in the 2nd half of a home 78-69 win for the Billikens over the Rams, action was halted due to a brawl within the stands. The commotion began behind the VCU bench but it was unclear what began the brawl.
As the delay wore on, broadcast cameras captured some of the action with the announcers confirming arena security and police were involved to try and break things up:
“You don’t often see this in college basketball, but there is a heckuva brawl going on in the stands. Police officers and security have come over to help out almost immediately,” the CBS Sports announcers can be heard relaying.

When the brawl eventually cleared, Saint Louis completed the win to pull even with VCU for 2nd place in the A-10 standings at 6-2 in conference play. But the story in this one unfortunately involved overzealous fans and the ugly scene off of the court.
The Billikens and Rams already played at VCU earlier in the season, so we won’t see another meeting between the two sides this season, barring a neutral site showdown in the A-10 Tournament.
