College basketball picks: DFS plays on Underdog for SEC, B1G title games
Welcome to Selection Sunday.
Before brackets are officially filled out, there’s just a little bit more business to attend to. Most notably, the SEC and Big Ten title games will take place on Sunday afternoon in the lead-up to the selection committee’s big reveal.
College basketball DFS picks
First up is the SEC Championship Game at 1 p.m. ET. Following that is the Big Ten Championship Game at 3:30 p.m. ET. Below you’ll find 3 DFS plays to consider on Underdog Fantasy for those games:
Tyler Nickel higher than 10.5 points
Tyler Nickel is in a significant shooting slump. He’s 13-for-58 from 3-point range over his last 7 games, including a 3-for-14 stretch at the SEC Tournament. However, I’m taking the high side of his projection here. This is simply a volume play. Although his efficiency has gone down, Nickel has continued to let it fly from downtown as a significant part of the Vanderbilt offense. Nickel also took 11 3-pointers against this same Arkansas defense when these teams met earlier this year.
Trevon Brazile lower than 8.5 rebounds
This play is a bit counterintuitive because Trevon Brazile went for 14 rebounds when these teams matched up earlier this year. The Razorbacks were absolutely dominant on the glass that day, decisively winning the battle on both ends of the floor. However, I’m expecting some regression for a couple of different reasons. One, Vandy’s offense had a particularly bad day (1.01 points per possession), which is the main reason why there were so many defensive rebounding opportunities in the first place. Additionally, Brazile is only averaging 7.2 rebounds per game during conference play. I think there’s a better than average chance he goes lower than 9 boards.
Trey Kaufman-Renn lower than 8.5 rebounds
Here’s another case where I’m fading a high-rebounding effort against the same opponent earlier in the season. Kaufman-Renn snagged 12 rebounds in a 91-80 loss to the Wolverines earlier this season, including 7 on the offensive side of the floor. I just don’t view that as a repeatable trick against this Michigan front line. The Wolverines are massive with Aday Mara, Morez Johnson and Yaxel Lendeborg in the front court. Kaufman-Renn averages 8.2 rebounds per game in Big Ten play but regularly goes below that projection. He’s had 6 or fewer boards in 4 of his last 8 games.
