DFS picks: Top Underdog plays for Tuesday’s SEC slate (March 4)

Tuesday’s SEC action includes 5 games from across the league, including a top-25 matchup between Texas A&M and Auburn.

Three of the 5 games feature at least 1 ranked team and each game on the slate carries NCAA Tournament ramifications for at least 1 squad. These games also mark the penultimate regular-season contest for each of the teams involved.

Chaney Johnson lower than 4.5 rebounds

Texas A&M’s superpower is offensive rebounding. The Aggies lead the nation in O-board rate, but how they do it is perhaps the most interesting part of their profile. They crash the glass from all over the floor. Five different A&M players average at least 1 offensive rebound per game during SEC play, including 2 guards.

Given A&M’s tendency, I like going lower than 4.5 rebounds for Johnson in this spot. I think he’s likely to see fewer opportunities on the glass in this matchup, especially relative to a big like Johni Broome. He’s corralled 4 or fewer rebounds in 2 of his last 3 games as well. Now facing the best offensive rebounding team in the country, Johnson should have even fewer opportunities on the glass than usual.

Wade Taylor lower than 2.5 3-pointers made

Wade Taylor has not been a good shooter this season despite his very high volume of attempts. He’s making under 30% of his 3-point tries this season during SEC play and is averaging just 2.2 makes during those contests as well. Now, he faces an Auburn defense that is top-10 in the nation in opponent 3-point percentage.

Here’s another quirky thing about Taylor: he has reverse home/away splits when it comes to 3-point shooting. On the season, he’s made 39% of his 3-point attempts in road games compared to just 29.9% at home. That’s highly unusual and may not stick, but it’s worth noting ahead of this game in College Station. Taylor has failed to make at least 3 3-pointers in 3 straight games while shooting just 14% over that span.

Amari Williams higher than 22.5 points+rebounds

Kentucky big man Amari Williams has hit this projection in 4 of his last 5 games and 9 times out of 16 overall in SEC play. His offensive role should grow slightly, too, as the Wildcats have officially ruled out Jaxson Robinson for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

On Tuesday night, Williams will face an LSU team that is one of the worst rebounding teams in the conference. The Tigers are 16th in defensive rebounding and 13th in offensive rebounding during league play. Their defensive rebounding rate also places them outside of the top 300 nationally for the full season — this is something that Williams can exploit. At this point in the season, it’s also worth noting that LSU’s campaign is virtually over. The Tigers are under .500 and have very little hope of any postseason action outside of 1 game in the SEC Tournament. It’s possible LSU’s effort will take a dip late in the year after suffering 3 straight double-digit losses.

Zvonimir Ivisic higher than 1.5 3-pointers made

Arkansas is coming off of an embarrassing performance to South Carolina over the weekend, but the Razorbacks have very little time to lick their wounds. Adou Thiero remains out, which is a big problem for an Arkansas offense that looked lost against the Gamecocks. Zvonimir Ivisic won’t solve that problem on his own, but he is a difficult matchup for most teams.

At 7-foot-2, Ivisic is an elite 3-point shooter — especially for his size. He’s making over 40% of his long-range attempts this season on over 4 attempts per game. On Tuesday night, Arkansas will face a Vanderbilt team that is simply dreadful at defending the 3-point line. Vandy has allowed its opponents to shoot 39.7% from downtown this season, which is easily the worst mark in the SEC. With Arkansas searching for offense, I think Ivisic making multiple 3-pointers is a likely path.
