Greg Sankey is the commissioner of the SEC, and is not afraid to call out people in the media that says something negative about his conference. There aren’t many people in the sports media world who takes shots at the SEC like Danny Kanell. Whether it is basketball or football, Kanell will take his shot at the conference any chance he can get. He recently said the conference is overrated in basketball, despite the fact that the SEC could potentially have 13 teams in the the NCAA tournament.

Sankey didn’t take long to make a response at Kanell, and he had some facts to back it up.

The conference was outstanding in the non-conference portion of the schedule, as SEC teams went a combined 185-23 against other conferences this year. The SEC was especially dominant against the ACC and Big 12, as SEC teams went 30-4 and 14-2 against those respective conferences. The only conference that gave the SEC any issues this year was the B1G, as the SEC won only 10 of 19 matchups.

There has been a running joke the SEC was average after the media blew up a story the conference was only .500 since January 4, but that is also when the SEC schedule was rolling.

It is still to be seen if the conference is truly as good as it appears, but right now, there isn’t a conference in college basketball that is close.
