John Calipari says Arkansas was thrown ‘in a coffin’ before win over St. John’s

John Calipari has had quite the interesting first year as the head coach at Arkansas. There have been some trying times dealing with injuries and having to bounce back after starting 0-5 in the SEC. Many teams would have crumbled in those types of moments, but the Razorbacks stayed together and continued battling.

Never was that togetherness more evident than during the Razorbacks 75-66 upset against the No. 2 seed St. John’s Red Storm. Talking to CBS Sports reporter Evan Washburn after the game, Calipari said that his team had been buried already, but they didn’t nail the coffin shut.

“They missed a lot of shots,” Calipari said after the game. “If they made more shots they probably beat us, but I’m so proud of these kids, how they play, and fight and persevere. They threw us in the coffin, they just forgot the nails. We pushed it open and we came out.”

Having to deal with that adversity has had Calipari say in the past this is as rewarding of a season as he can remember, and that was before the Sweet 16 appearance. Things could be getting even better for the Razorbacks, as leading scorer and rebounder Adou Theiro is getting closer to being back.

Arkansas will take on the winner of Texas Tech and Drake next week with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line.
