Kentucky coach Mark Pope was dealt a brutal blow on the recruiting trail on Tuesday night.

Tyran Stokes, the consensus No. 1 player in the nation for the class of 2026, committed to play for the Kansas Jayhawks next season despite a months-long effort by UK’s staff to land his pledge.

Kentucky went to great lengths in an attempt to bring Stokes to Lexington next season, but ultimately came up short.

That failure paired with Kentucky’s struggles in the transfer portal so far this offseason has Big Blue Nation frustrated with the direction of the program.

Kentucky has produced middling results through 2 seasons with Pope at the helm and may be taking a step back in Year 3 barring any significant roster moves in the coming weeks. Key players such as Otega Oweh, Denzel Aberdeen, Brandon Garrison, Collin Chandler, Jasper Johnson, Jaland Lowe and Jayden Quaintance are all set to move on from the program this offseason.

As things currently stand, Kentucky’s roster is likely to be built around Washington transfer guard Zoom Diallo and returning big man Malachi Moreno. The Wildcats are certainly capable of adding big-time talent in the coming weeks, but the fanbase is currently frustrated with the direction of the program in the wake of missing out on Stokes.
