The SEC is entering the home stretch of its men’s hoops regular season gauntlet, and several programs are still in the hunt for what they hope will be berths in the NCAA tournament come selection Sunday.
One squad that looks to be out of the running for March Madness already, though, is the LSU Tigers, who are currently sitting in second-to-last place in the SEC standings as of this writing with a 2-9 record in league play.
It’s been a rough campaign for the Bayou Bengals on the hardwood, and it looks like things got even worse on Saturday with CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein reporting that star guard Dedan Thomas is set to have season-ending foot surgery.
A former top-40 recruit coming out of high school, Thomas joined the Tigers last offseason after spending a couple of years at UNLV and made an immediate impact for head coach Matt McMahon’s squad.
The nagging foot injury has limited Thomas to just 16 games this season. Still, he’s been the Tigers’ best scorer when he’s played, averaging a team-leading 15.3 points on 45.9/30.2/83.3 shooting splits while also averaging a team-leading 6.5 assists per game.
With LSU’s March Madness chances all but eliminated, it looks like the star guard has decided to shut things down early to prepare for what would be his final season of eligibility in 2026-27.
