Miami (OH) coach promises to wear Speedo on Selection Sunday if team goes unbeaten
When the Arizona Wildcats lost to the Kansas Jayhawks earlier this week, the list of unbeaten teams in college basketball whittled its way down to 1 team: the Miami (OH) Redhawks.
The MAC squad improved to 25-0 on Friday night by beating its chief rival, the Ohio Bobcats, 90-74 in the “Battle of the Bricks.”
With the win, Miami stands just 9 games — 6 regular-season, 3 MAC Tournament — away from entering the NCAA Tournament undefeated. If the Redhawks can pull off that feat, their head coach, Travis Steele, will apparently strip things down for Selection Sunday. On ESPN’s College GameDay, Steele told Rece Davis that he’d wear a Speedo for the NCAA Tournament Selection Show if Miami goes 34-0 before the Big Dance.
The Redhawks’ swim team has held a consistent presence at Miami’s basketball games throughout this campaign. They’ve helped create a strong home environment for Steele’s bunch. If their antics continue aiding Miami’s unbeaten quest, Steele repping their uniform on Selection Sunday will be well-deserved.
This is particularly true because the Redhawks’ NCAA Tournament participation is far from guaranteed, even though they haven’t suffered a defeat, because of their poor strength of schedule.
If Miami remains unbeaten and wins the MAC Tournament, its strength of schedule won’t enter the NCAA Tournament Committee’s equation beyond seeding purposes. So, if you’re hoping the Redhawks get in, you’d better hope to see Steele in a Speedo on Selection Sunday.
