Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry has issued an apology after his actions following the Fighting Irish’s controversial 72-71 loss at Cal on Friday evening.

The Fighting Irish were up 71-68 in the closing seconds of the game before they intentionally fouled the Golden Bears’ Dai Dai Ames. However, the foul was ruled to have been during Ames’s successful three-point attempt. After the call was reversed, then eventually upheld, Ames completed a four-point play to give Cal the lead for good.

After the final whistle, Shrewsberry charged toward one of the referees and needed to be restrained.

“I want to apologize for what took place immediately after the Cal game (Friday) night,” Shrewsberry said in a statement released by Notre Dame on Saturday morning. “My actions were inappropriate and not symbolic of the leader I strive to be and what Notre Dame expects of its coaches and educators. I will learn from this lack of judgement and be better in the future. I want to apologize to our team, our University and its leaders, to Coach (Mark) Madsen and his team, and to the ACC, as my actions were unacceptable.”

The loss dropped the Irish to 10-5 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. Despite the disappointing loss, they’re on track for their best season of the Shrewsberry era after wining 13 and 15 games in his first two seasons.

Notre Dame hosts Clemson on Jan. 10.
