Nate Ament was brought to Tennessee by Rick Barnes with the hope that the freshman would deliver in big moments and help the team win games. He did just that on Tuesday night by scoring 23 points in an 87-82 double-overtime victory over Texas A&M.
It wasn’t his most efficient night from the floor, as he went 7-of-16 from the field, including 0-of-4 from the 3-point line. However, he stepped up when his team needed him most, as he scored 10 of his points in the two overtime periods. The 23 points tied a season-high that he set against Northern Kentucky in the second game of the season.
Ament got plenty of help in this game, as guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie scored 18 points, while Bishop Boswell and Felix Okpara both finished with double-doubles.
Tennessee is currently No. 9 in the country in rebounding, with 42.9 per game, and that was an area they dominated the Aggies in on Tuesday night, as they won the battle on the glass 60-35.
The SEC once again figures to be as competitive a conference as there is in college basketball, so getting back to .500 in SEC play is big for the Vols (12-5, 2-2 SEC) before Saturday’s matchup with Kentucky in Knoxville.
Tip-off for that game will be at 12 p.m. ET, and the game will be on ESPN.
