RJ Luis granted injunction, cleared to play for LSU in 2026

LSU basketball now has a verdict on RJ Luis and it’s in their favor. A Louisiana judge is granting Luis an injunction, which will allow the 6-foot-7 wing to play for LSU this season, according to Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger.
Luis, a former St. John’s player from the Class of 2022, was undrafted by the NBA in 2025, then inked a 2-way deal with the Utah Jazz and was traded to the Boston Celtics prior to being waved.
The NCAA can request a stay to pause the injunction or pursue other methods if it wants to attempt to prevent the 23-year-old Luis from returning to college basketball.
In total, Luis appeared in 3 NBA preseason games for the Boston Celtics, scoring 6 points in 7 minutes of playing time. During the 2024-25 season for St. John’s, Luis averaged 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds en route to earning Big East Player of the Year and second-team AP All-American honors. Luis departed the NCAA after his junior season while being in the transfer portal.
On May 19, Luis committed to LSU, setting the stage for the controversy.
Via The Advocate, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey asked Judge Ronald Johnson to maintain the NCAA’s eligibility rules to prevent athletes from returning, claiming it is “essential to the integrity of college sports.”
