Following Kansas State’s firing of head coach Jerome Tang, Sports Illustrated has named one SEC head coach as a potential candidate for the Kansas State job.

Tang was fired days after he harshly criticized his players following a blowout loss. As Kansas State looks to move forward, many names have been floated as potential candidates for the job. One of those names is Mississippi State head coach Chris Jans.

Jans has spent the past four seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. He’s led them to back-to-back tournament appearances and 3 straight 20+ win seasons. Here’s what SI had to say about Jans in terms of the Kansas State job:

“Pulling a sitting high-major coach won’t be easy, but Jans might be a realistic target coming from perhaps the toughest job in the SEC at Mississippi State,” Kevin Sweeney writes. “Jans has won everywhere he has worked, will leave no stone unturned for talent and has ties to the state from being an assistant under Gregg Marshall at Wichita State.”

Jans coached under Marshall from 2007 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2017, after a one-year stop at Bowling Green.

Jans currently has the Bulldogs sitting in 12th in the SEC with a 12-13 overall record. He’s never had a team finish under .500 as a head coach.
