Texas has been on an up-and-down start in year one under Sean Miller, but are moving in the right direction in their last two games. First, they pulled the upset at Alabama on Saturday, and then the Longhorns picked up a huge 80-64 victory upset over previously undefeated Vanderbilt on Wednesday night.
It was a two-possession game for much of the night, as the Longhorns had a 6-point lead with 9:09 left. However, the Longhorns would take over the rest of the way, outscoring the Commodores 19-9 the rest of the way to get the win.
Leading the way for the Longhorns was Matas Vokietatis led the way with 22 points and 7 rebounds, while guard Tramon Mark also had 21 points. Vanderbilt guard Duke Miles also finished with 21 points to lead the Commodores.
The battle on the glass was a huge difference in this game, as Texas out-rebounded Vanderbilt 42-24.
Just a few days ago, Texas looked like a team that wasn’t going to be able to compete for an NCAA Tournament spot. However, two wins against top 25 teams have changed things, and there will be plenty of opportunities for more big wins in the tough SEC.
