Texas women’s basketball upsets South Carolina, wins SEC Tournament
Texas has won the SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in program history.
The Longhorns defeated South Carolina in the title game on Sunday afternoon by the score of 78-61. Texas won the first quarter 27-12 and then cruised to a double-digit victory over a Gamecocks program that only lost 2 SEC games during the regular season.
Prior to this setback, South Carolina had won 5 of the last 6 SEC Tournament titles, including 3 in a row.
Texas was led by forward Madison Booker, who scored 18 points and nabbed 4 rebound in the win. Justice Carlton added 15 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists as well.
Although this is Texas’s first SEC Tournament title, the Longhorns did win the Big 12 Tournament in 2003, 2023 and 2024. Head coach Vic Schaefer has led Texas to the Elite Eight or Final Four in 4 of his first 5 seasons at the helm. Last season, Texas made the Final Four for the first time since 2003.
Texas and South Carolina could meet again this season. Both programs are among the leaders in national title odds according to the latest Kalshi markets:
