Tyler Tanner’s half-court heave could not have been closer to going in.
After clanging off the backboard and ricocheting around the rim, the ball (and Tanner) fell to the court with the scoreboard reading Nebraska 74, Vanderbilt 72. Days after winning the first NCAA Tournament game in Nebraska history, the Cornhuskers are moving on to the Sweet 16 with a hard-fought win over Vanderbilt.
“I don’t even know what to say right now,” Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg said on the court postgame.
A monumental win for Nebraska proved to be a truly devastating loss for one of the better Vanderbilt basketball teams in program history. Mark Byington’s squad put up a valiant effort. The Commodores scored 40 points across the final 20 minutes, outscoring Nebraska 40-35, but a bit of a slow first half mixed with an insane shooting effort from the Huskers sealed Vanderbilt’s fate.
As for Tanner, he left it all out on the court. The star sophomore scored a game-high 27 points with 4 assists and 4 steals. He and Tyler Nickel combined to hit 8 of their 22 3-point attempts on the night.
With the loss, Vanderbilt finish Year 2 under Byington with a 27-9 record, the 2nd most wins across a single season in Commodore basketball history.
