Vanderbilt and head coach Mark Byington just landed one of the top commitments in the modern history of Commodores basketball. Five-star small forward Gabe Nesmith, a top-20 prospect in the Class of 2027, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt on Tuesday over Providence, Ole Miss, Auburn and Tennessee.

Nesmith ranks behind only Darius Garland and Simi Shittu, both members of the 2018 class, as the 3rd highest-rated Vanderbilt prospect in the modern recruiting era.

Nesmith hails from Atlanta, Georgia, where he plays in Overtime Elite. He also plays for the Nightrydas on the EYBL circuit, averaging just under 19 points per game. Nesmith stands at 6-foot-6 and ranks No. 20 nationally and No. 6 among small forward per 247Sports.

When asked why he chose Vanderbilt, Nesmith said the following to Travis Branham of 247Sports:

“I would just say their coaching staff,” he said. “Their coaching staff is really personal. They got to know me and my mom and dad. It was really cool. They stayed on me even when I was injured. They didn’t stop recruiting me or anything like that. It was a really good recruitment, and I just believed in Coach [Mark] Byington and how good he is as a coach. He’s been successful at Vanderbilt and everywhere he’s been.”

Nesmith is the first addition of the 2027 cycle for Vanderbilt.
