The depth of the SEC was on display late into the afternoon and evening on Saturday as the conference continued to be supply the NFL with a bulk of talent. But even given its recent track, the SEC set a new record.
The numbers were steady throughout the draft, with the SEC producing 28 picks in the first three rounds, including nine in the first round, with 10 each in the fifth round and sixth round, and nine in the seventh round. In last year’s draft, the SEC had 53 players drafted, while the ACC came in second with 45. The last time the SEC didn’t have the most players picked from a single conference came in 2006, when the Big Ten had 41, and the SEC had 37.
Ole Miss draftee Ken Webster, a defensive back, helped the SEC set the record of 64 picks, which topped the previous mark set in 2013. Webster was picked by the New England Patriots with the 38th pick in the seventh round.
What’s more, 13 NFL drafts have had an SEC team as the top talent provider. This year, Alabama took the top spot, though the SEC was well-represented in that area as well. Here are the schools with the most picks in this year’s draft:
Alabama – 10
Ohio State – 9
Oklahoma – 8
Washington – 8
Texas A&M – 7
Georgia – 7
