Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack shared a funny bit of history this week, revealing a personal link to the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback Ty Simpson.
In 2010, Wommack was the quarterbacks coach at UT Martin, working under head coach Jason Simpson — Ty Simpson’s father. At the time, Ty was just a kid, but Wommack already saw the potential that would eventually make him one of the top QBs in college football.
“I said this dude will be the starting quarterback at Alabama at one point,” Wommack joked, per Nick Kelly of AL.com.
That full-circle moment highlights what a small world college football can be at times.
Wommack, now a key coaching figure at Alabama, is responsible for building one of the nation’s top defenses, while Ty Simpson is gearing up for his first full campaign as the Tide’s starting signal-caller.
While the two didn’t work together directly back in the day, the early common ground adds a memorable footnote to carry into Simpson’s fourth year at Alabama.
“Ty just always had a ball in his hand,” Wommack said. “Was always around the team. Jason did a great job of involving his family.”
Every SEC quarterback job is a tough one going into each college football season. But it appears Wommack has the utmost belief in Simpson.
